Numbers we meant to align vertically. Like when you are doing math. The spacing assigned to numbers is equal to each number. The number 3 and the number 1 both get the same amount of horizontal space. So you need to put extra attention to the kerning around the number 1. Each typeface is different so each use needs unique kerning work. This is especially important with display sized type.
